The claim comes after the Popocatépetl volcano, which is roughly 70 km southeast of Mexico City, saw an upsurge in gas, smoke, and incandescent rock since late last week. This prompted officials to close down schools and parks, conduct safety drills, and warn millions of residents in the area around the volcano to prepare for possible evacuations.

Fact Check

NewsMeter found that the video is from Ecuador, not Mexico.

On performing a reverse image search of the video’s keyframe, we found it tweeted by Ecuador Comunicación on 27 April. It said the video shows damage caused to the Pedro Menéndez Gilbert overpass in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

We also found the video in a report published on 27 April on the Spanish website RTS. It also said that the video shows damage caused to Pedro Menéndez Gilbert bridge in Guayaquil after a fire.

On 27 April, the Guayaquil fire department tweeted about the incident and shared photos and videos of firefighters trying to control the fire.

Hence, we conclude that the video is from Ecuador and does not show the effects of volcanic activity in Mexico.
