Nellore: A large ovarian tumour weighing 6 kgs was removed from a 42-year-old patient at Medicover Cancer Institute in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh.

The surgery was conducted by a team of doctors headed by Dr. Sowdepalli Avinash, a consultant surgical oncologist.

According to the doctors, a 42-year-old woman, Alivelamma, had been suffering from abdominal pain and abdominal distension for the past three months. She visited Medicover Hospital in Nellore for medical treatment.

“After a thorough evaluation by CT scan and other tests, the doctors found a large solid-cystic tumour arising from the ovary and occupying the entire abdominal cavity, resulting in severe abdominal pain, distension, and intermittent vomiting. The tumour was found to be suspicious for malignancy on ultrasound-guided FNAC,” said Dr. Sowdepalli Avinash.

After the patient’s family was explained about the disease, Dr. Avinash and his team performed a complex surgery and successfully removed the large tumour weighing 6 kg and with a diameter of 30x30 cm along with the uterus.

According to Dr. Avinash, “If the operation was delayed, it would have led to serious complications. Many precautions were taken during the surgery both by the surgical team and the anaesthesia team.”

The surgery was done free of cost under the Arogya Shree scheme. The doctors said the patient has fully recovered and was discharged in stable condition.
