Hyderabad: Dr Krishna M Ella, renowned scientist and entrepreneur, has been appointed president of the Indian Vaccine Manufacturers Association (IVMA) for the term spanning April 2024 to 2026. He is the co-founder and executive chairman of Bharat Biotech, a pioneering company in vaccine development, and is credited with establishing Genome Valley.

Dr Ella succeeded Adar C Poonawala, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in the biotechnology sector.

Aiming for widespread access to vaccinations

In his inaugural statement, Dr Ella emphasised IVMA’s commitment to global health equity and innovation. He underscored the association’s mission to ensure widespread access to life-saving immunisations, stating, “Vaccines are the vital pillar of global health.”

Global collaboration and compliance

Dr Ella highlighted the importance of aligning with global standards, urging IVMA members to support African nations’ public health initiatives and adhere to WHO and USFDA regulations. He stressed the need for global competitiveness while fortifying India’s position in preventive care.

“With the world facing ongoing health crises, Dr Ella’s leadership is pivotal in addressing emerging infectious diseases. Under his guidance, IVMA aims to enhance collaboration among stakeholders to expedite vaccine development and production processes,” read an official statement.

Dr Harshavardhan, director general of IVMA, praised Dr Ella’s expertise and commitment to innovation, stating, “His leadership will lead the industry in bringing transformative advancements in vaccine research and manufacturing capabilities.”

Dr Ella’s appointment marked a critical phase for IVMA, signalling a renewed dedication to excellence and humanity’s well-being. The association aims to advocate for the Indian vaccine industry’s progress and profitability while maintaining its status as a global hub for quality vaccines at affordable prices.
