Warangal: BRS LS candidate Dr Kavya pulls out of Lok Sabha race

Hyderabad: There seems to be no end to the woes of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) post-assembly polls debacle in Telangana.

After Keshava Rao jumped ship, BRS suffered another setback when its candidate from the Warangal Lok Sabha constituency Dr Kavya Kadiyam dropped out of the race.

Daughter of former Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari, Dr Kavya announced the decision in a letter to BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao.

“I thank you for allowing me to contest from Warangal Lok Sabha seat to be held on May 13, 2024. In the last few days, the media has reported corruption, land grabbing, phone tapping, and liquor scam which have hit the prestige and credibility of the party. Lack of coordination and working in silos in the district is detrimental to the party. Against this background, I have decided to opt out of the contest. I request KCR garu, elders, and senior party leaders to excuse me.”

Dr Kavya’s decision comes at a time when Hyderabad Mayor Vijayalakshmi and her father BRS Rajya Sabha MP K Keshav Rao are likely to join Congress on March 30. This will be a big jolt to the BRS in the run-up to the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Speculations are rife that Keshav Rao is holding a meeting with KCR.

According to the sources, Keshav Rao met Deepa Das Munshi three days ago. However, Keshav Rao has yet to declare about joining the party. Keshav Rao held a very senior position in the party and his switch over to Congress would be like Ghar Vapsi.

In a statement on Thursday, Keshava Rao stated that he would soon go back to Congress. "I worked for BRS for ten years. I joined the party for the sake of a separate Telangana state. It became a reality because of the Congress at the Centre. I haven't resigned from the BRS, but will soon announce the date. However, my son, K Viplav Rao will stay in the BRS."

It is also said that former minister A Indrakaran Reddy will also join the Congress soon.

Keshava Rao joined the BRS (then TRS) in June 2013 and served as secretary general of the party. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha for two terms. He also headed the BRS Parliamentary Party.
